In the Old Testament, the Hebrews were given a list of rules to follow in order to be in “good standing” with God. Simply follow the rules, and everything is good, right? The only problem with that is that over and over again the Israelites failed to live up to their end of the bargain…and over and over again, there were consequences. When Jesus came, He gave us an entire new standard: the standard of grace and mercy. In fact, we were released from the rule of the law but at the same time, the new standard seems to hold us to an even higher way of living. So how do we reconcile all this?
